Historically, the populationThe city of Novosibirsk varied, mainly due to migratory citizens. According to archival records, in 1893 in the then-settlement of Mykolaiv lived about 740 people. By 1897 (at the time of the census), the residents were already around eight thousand. The population of Novosibirsk by 1926 reached 120.1 thousand. In 1962, a milestone was reached. By 2004, Novosibirsk began to occupy the third place in Russia in terms of numbers after St. Petersburg and Moscow. In less than seventy years, the number of inhabitants has reached one million. For comparison: for example, Chicago took ninety years for this, Moscow - more than seven hundred, New York - about 250, and Kiev - almost 900. During the Second World War, the intensity of migration increased due to the evacuation of people from the western regions of the country. In the 1960s and 1970s, its role was significantly reduced, which was due to the introduction of strict passport control, as well as restrictions on residence permits. Since 1992, the population of Novosibirsk began to decline.
