Linderhof - a castle to which the King of Bavaria LudwigII gave the name "the yard where the lime grows". It was his favorite residence, in the courtyard of which the tree of lime grows for 300 years. Linderhof is a castle whose photo you see below, one of the many places of Bavaria, where tourists must definitely visit, because this is a real Versailles in the Alps.

Historical reference

The castle is located in the Graswangtal Valley near the monastery Ettal and Oberammergau amidst a magnificent stern mountain landscape.

The idea of ​​this construction appeared in the king in1867 immediately after visiting the magnificent Versailles. Two years later, Ludwig II purchased land in the hunting lodge area, formerly owned by his father Maximilian II. The construction of the castle went under the guidance of architect Georg Dolman (the famous creator of Neuschwanstein) and lasted 8 years. Visiting France, Ludwig II was so inspired by the beauty of the Palace of Versailles that he demanded to embody in Linderhof all the elegant French luxury. Repeatedly sent to France sculptors and builders to study the smallest details of Versailles. Symbol of Linderhof Bavarian king chose a peacock. Bird statues are adorned with pavilions of the complex alley, all halls. The center of luxury - busts, portraits and statues of the King of France. Linderhof is a "fairy-tale castle." He, perhaps, is the only one of all the palaces, the construction of which managed to end in the lifetime of Ludwig.

Precious articles, modeling, furniture from pinkwood, mirrors, interiors sparkling with gold, tapestries - absolutely everything inside the palace is striking in its elegance, richness and inimitable beauty. The interior of the castle was painted by the great artists of Europe, among them were Wilhelm Gauschild and Angelo Quadlio. Linderhof is a castle that embodied in its interiors a unique combination of magnificent grandeur of baroque and intimate sophistication of rococo. It was precisely such a fabulous and conditional nature that was extremely close to Ludwig II, an immutable idealist and dreamer. The palace has a lot of luxurious halls, and all of them are available for inspection. East Tapestry, Bedroom, Western Gobelin, Dining and Reception - the largest. Dining and Western are divided into four offices: Blue, Purple, Yellow and Pink.

A park

On the territory of the palace, which is 80 hectares, the park is incredibly beautiful - a stunning masterpiece of landscape art. Its design was developed in 1868 by Carl von Effner.

The source of his inspiration was again the parkThe Palace of Versailles. When creating the park, the steep hills around the Grasvangtal valley were correctly used. A truly unique composition is made up of terraced gardens in the Renaissance style, Baroque and English landscaped gardens. The park complex includes not only the palace itself, but also other buildings of different styles and eras:

  • Water parterre is the central facade of the palace.
  • Three terraces in Italian style, located on the slope.
  • The eastern parterre, consisting of ornamental flower beds with sculptures.
  • Western parterre.
  • Galleries with lime vaults.
  • Moorish pavilion.
  • Grotto of Venus.

The unusual beauty of the park is emphasized by the surrounding Alpine landscapes.

Linderhof Castle: how to get there?

The easiest way is to get to the small town of Oberammergau, from where the 9622 takes the bus to the palace. You have to drive about 12 km. Linderhof is open to visitors during:

  • from April to September from 9.00 to 18.00;
  • from October to March from 10.00 to 16.00;
  • in winter, only the palace is open to visitors.

In addition, every year on the birthday of the King of Bavaria, Ludwig II (August 24), you can observe the salute in Oberammergau. Have a nice trip!
