What is a homestead?

This term takes its roots from the word "garden", and until the 16th century, the words "shrine" and "shrinkage" were used to refer to the manor. In the dictionary of V.I. Dal said that the manor is a manor yard, with various buildings, a garden and a garden. However, the meaning of this term for culture is much broader than just an architectural ensemble. On the territory of these buildings passed the life of Russian society, arose culture, thought. It was from here that the spread of knowledge began. Russian manor is a concentration of history, culture and nature.

Types of estates

Usually called these categories of estates, which have a number of features:

• Boyar manors. In their composition, there was usually a manor house-mansion, guest wings, stables, carriage house, barn, greenhouse, people's hut. The park had a landscape design: there were ponds, alleys, gazebos, grottos in the design. Often the territory of the manor house had its own church.
• City estates. This type is typical for Moscow, St. Petersburg and provincial cities. On the territory of the city estates there was a gentleman's house, a stable, outbuildings, rooms for servants, a garden. The garden of the city estates was public and open to visit.
• Peasant manors differed only in the absence of a coach house and a park. But the presence of a garden and vegetable garden was mandatory. Also in peasant manor houses were a hut and a stable.

Manors today

Now the word "homestead" is gradually returning touse. Interest in this subject is growing in the society, there are publications in the press, scientific works that cover the issues of history and culturologists of the Russian estate. There are many different foundations that devote their activities to the restoration of ancient estates and the creation of museums.

Manors are interested in people not only as a monumenthistory and culture, but also as a special way of life. A country house is not synonymous with the word homestead. Tiny dachas on six acres or typical cottages are no longer in fashion. The farmstead is a housing that has to individualism. This is facilitated by belonging, location, architecture and landscape design. Today's people's interest in manors is a return to our traditions, which were interrupted after the revolution of 1917, when the notions of private property and private life were destroyed, which were replaced by public ones.
