Nomarch is who? Definition of the concept and features
Mysterious Ancient Egypt is often calledthe cradle of civilization, for it was here that for the first time many objects of the material world and the political sphere were invented or improved. The Egyptians managed to create a complex state structure, headed by a pharaoh - the supreme ruler, who, according to ordinary people, was a representative of the gods on earth. There were Egyptians and Nomarchs. This is an interesting term, so we'll get to know him better.
Definition of concept
In antiquity, nom was a community, grown from tribal units and having a more complex structure. A nomarch is the ruler of such a community. Initially, there were more than 40 nomas in Egypt, each of which was independent, that is why it was not yet a question of a single state.
However, the civilization continued its development, andthe nomas first united in Upper and Lower Egypt, and then a single Egyptian kingdom was formed. Therefore, we can say that the nomarch is not just a ruler, but also a predecessor of mighty pharaohs.
The apparatus of management after association
So, a single powerful state was formed, headed by a pharaoh. In addition to the supreme ruler, the following posts were distinguished:
- Vizier. He acted as chancellor, kept the state seal, was in charge of treasury and town planning. His powers were wide.
- The military commander-in his charge was the army.
- The Nomarchs are the managers on the ground, representatives of a mighty pharaoh in remote areas of Egypt. When in the Middle Kingdom there was a strengthening of centralized power, the pharaohs tried to choose among the governors loyal to themselves people ready to subjugate, and proud rulers, accustomed to independence, displaced with the help of a strong army.
So, at the head of the state was the pharaoh, whose power was not limited. In places, especially in remote areas from the capital, he appointed his faithful deputy. In ancient Egypt he was called a nomarch. Gradually, the administrative division becomes more complicated, new nomas appear, and among the governors, rulers try to select people who are famous for their battles, and do not have noble origins.
Nomarch is a term that has been rethought. If initially it was a ruler, rich and noble, independent, then, with the onset of state centralization, they began to understand the governor of the pharaoh, the faithful man who deserved his position in battle.
