Chichikov's attitude to Nozdryov. Analysis of the episode "Chichikov from Nozdryov"

Chichikov and Nozdrev are the heroes of the poem Dead Souls N. V. Gogol. The author published it in 1842. Originally he planned a three-volume work. In 1842, the light saw the first volume. However, the second, almost ready, was destroyed by the writer himself (in drafts, several chapters from him were preserved). The third one was not even started, there are only some information about it. Therefore, we will consider Chichikov's attitude to Nozdryov only on the basis of the first volume of the work. Let's start by getting to know these characters.

Who are Chichikov and Nozdryov?

Pavel Ivanovich Chichikov is a former official, and nowthe schemer. This retired collegiate counselor was engaged in the purchase of "dead souls" (that is, written testimonies of deceased peasants) in order to lay them, as living, to obtain a loan from a bank and gain influence in society. He watches himself, dresses smartly. Chichikov even after a dusty and distant road manages to look as if he had just visited a barber and a tailor.

Nozdryov is a 35-year-old dutiful "talker,"The third landlord in the work with which Chichikov decided to start a bargain about the dead souls, let's try to answer the question about how Chichikov treated Nozdrev, for this we must trace the entire history of their relationship.

Acquaintance of Chichikov with Nozdrev

In the first chapter of the work there is theiracquaintance, during lunch with the prosecutor. Then the characters accidentally collide in a tavern (the fourth chapter). Chichikov goes from Korobochka to Sobakevich. In turn, Nozdrev, together with Mezhuyev, his son-in-law, returns from the fair, where he lost and drank everything, including the crew. The landowner immediately lures to his estate and Gogol's swindler. Clearly, Chichikov wanted from Nozdryov, the landowner, why he agreed to go with him-he was interested in "dead souls".

Delivering guests, the landlord is immediately acceptedshow the economy. Nozdryov starts with the stables, then talks about the wolf cub who lives with him and eats only raw meat. Then the landlord goes to the pond. Here, according to his stories, there are huge pike, which can only be pulled by two fishermen together. Then follows the display of the kennels, where Nozdrev looks like a "father of the family" among the dogs. After that, the guests go to the field, where, of course, the haremongers are caught with their hands. It is clear that the attitude of Chichikov to the landlord Nozdrev after all this boasting is unlikely to be positive. After all, this hero is very perceptive.

Drinking and its consequences

The landlord is not very concerned about lunch. Only at 5 o'clock the guests sit at the table. He explains that food is not the main thing in his life. But Nozdryov has a lot of drinks, and he lacks the available ones and he inventes his own incredible "compositions" (champagnon and bourguignon together, a rockberry that gives off the bacon, "with a creamy taste"). Thus the landlord spares himself. Chichikov, having noticed this, imperceptibly pours out his glasses.

Nevertheless, the "sparing" master of the morningis to him in one coat and with a pipe in his teeth. He assures, as well as follows the hussar's hero, that he had a "squadron" in his mouth. It does not matter if there is a hangover or not. It is important only that a decent reveler must certainly suffer from it. What was the attitude of Nozdryov to Chichikov? It is best revealed by the quarrel that occurred during the bargaining.

The quarrel between Chichikov and Nozdrev

The author of this false hangover is alsoother attitude. During the bargaining that took place the night before, Nozdrev had a big quarrel with Chichikov. The fact is that he refused to play cards for "dead souls", and also to buy a stallion of real "Arab blood", and to get the souls "in addition". The attitude of Nozdryov to Chichikov's proposal thus requires justification. However, the evening squabble of the landlord can not be attributed to alcohol, as well as to explain the morning peaceableness of oblivion made in a drunken intoxication. Nozdryov in his actions is guided by only one spiritual quality: bordering with unconsciousness unrestrained.

Playing Checkers at Souls

The landowner does not plan, does not plan anything, hejust does not know anything about anything. Chichikov, agreeing (very recklessly) to play checkers on the souls (since the checkers do not happen to be criminals), almost becomes a victim of Nozdrev's revelry. Souls placed at the end are estimated at 100 rubles. The landlord shifts 3 pieces of paper at once with his sleeve and thus holds one of them in the queens. Chichikov does not have anything else to do than mix the figures.

The play on souls emphasizes the essence of both heroes,and not just reveals how Chichikov treated the landowner Nozdrev. The latter asks for a soul of 100 rubles, and Chichikov wants to bring down the price to 50. Nozdryov's attitude to Chichikov's proposal is as follows: he asks to include in the same amount a gold sign or some puppy. This landlord, being an incorrigible player, does not play for the sake of winning - he is interested in the process itself. Nozdrev irritates and angers a loss. The final game is predictable and familiar - this is a conflict that goes into a fight.

The flight of Chichikov

Chichikov at the same time thinks first of all notabout physical pain, but that courtyard people will witness this unpleasant scene. But the reputation should be supported by all possible means. The hero resolves the conflict, threatening his image, in the usual way - he flies. Later, when the whole city becomes aware of the purchase of "dead souls", it does the same. Chichikov's attitude to Nozdryov, their cheating deal is a parody of entrepreneurial activity. It complements the characterization of both characters, demonstrating the vulgarity and meanness of the masters of the "middle hand".

It seems that the massacre of Chichikov is imminent. The landowner screams in excitement: "Beat him!" The guest is rescued only by the appearance of the captain, a man of police, a formidable man with a huge mustache.

Scene at the governor's ball and Nozdryov's visit

Chichikov hopes that he will not seeNozdrev. However, these heroes will meet again twice. One of the meetings takes place at the governor's ball (the eighth chapter). In this scene, the buyer of "dead souls" was almost destroyed. Nozdrev, suddenly encountering him, screams at the top of his voice that this is a "Kherson landlord" who "sells dead souls." This creates a lot of incredible rumors. When, finally entangled in different versions, officials of the city of NN call Nozdrev, he, not at all embarrassed by the contradictory nature of all these opinions, confirms all of them (Chapter Nine). Chichikov allegedly bought dead souls worth several thousand, he was a counterfeiter and a spy, tried to take the governor's daughter away, and Sidor was to marry young people for 75 rubles. Nozdrev confirms even that Chichikov is Napoleon.

In the tenth chapter, the landlord himself reports theserumors Chichikov, who is making a visit without an invitation. Nozdryov, once again forgetting about his resentment, offers him help in "taking away" the governor's daughter, and only for 3000 rubles.

Inner World of Nozdryov

This landowner, like other heroes of the poem of Gogol,as if he carries the outlines of his own soul to the outlines of everyday life. At home everything is arranged stupidly. Wooden goats stand in the middle of the dining room, there are no papers and books in the office, allegedly Turkish daggers hang on the wall (Chichikov sees on one of them the name of the master - Savely Sibiryakov). Nozdrev refers to his favorite organ as organ.

Gogol compares the depraved and frustratedthe soul of the landlord with this spoiled barrel organ that played not without pleasantness, but in the middle something went wrong, as the mazurk ended with the song "Malbrooke went on a hike", which, in turn, ended with some familiar waltz. Already the landowner had long ceased to twist it, but there was one brisk pipe in this organ, which did not want to calm down, and for a long time whistled alone. Of course, in the bewildered, crippled souls of Gogol's heroes, these "God's pipes" are very noteworthy, whistling sometimes by themselves and confusing well-designed, impeccably and logically planned frauds.

How does Chichikov reveal himself in his relationship with Nozdrev

Chichikov's attitude to the Nozdrev revealsinner world of Gogol's swindler. Running away from the landowner, who makes another "story", the hunter for "dead souls" cannot understand what he went to the estate, why he trusted him, "like a child, like a fool."
