Moscow Small Ring: History and Current Status

Small Ring of the Moscow RailwayIt is a ring line connecting all 10 radial branches of the railways of Moscow. Until recently, it was used only for freight traffic. Includes 12 stations for freight trains.

General information

The date of foundation of this infrastructure is July 19, 1908. The mileage calculation for MOR starts from the intersection of the tracks with the Nikolayevskaya Railway.

The Moscow Small Ring

The length of the ring is 54 km, and the total length of this railway system is 145 km. This difference is associated with a large number of branches from the main highway.

The Moscow small ring is a convenient way of exchange between the main railway lines diverging radially from the center of the capital in all major directions.

Although the main task of the MOR is transportationcargo, since recently the ring is also used for passenger transportation. This was facilitated by the modernization of the lines, carried out in 2012-2016. The opening of the passenger traffic was in 2016.

History of MMK

The decision to create the MOR was adopted in 1897even under Emperor Nicholas II. Work on the project was conducted from 1898 to 1902. Of the 13 different options, one was adopted, which assumed the creation of 4 tracks (2 passenger and 2-cargo). Construction work began in 1902. They lasted until 1908. Of the four paths, two were laid. This was due to financial difficulties.

Distance from the railway to the center of the capitalturned out to be different on different sites. So, in the north-west direction the railway is 12 km from the center, and only 5 km from the center. In 1917 the border of the city roughly coincided with Zh. by the line of the Moscow ring.

Construction of the small Moscow Ring

On the Moscow small ring 14stations and 2 stops. Along the railroad, technical buildings have been built. On the ring, passengers were allowed to start, but later only freight began to go. During the period of active electrification of the railways, the Moscow ring remained un-electrified, which was explained by technical problems. Only diesel locomotives went around it. However, the situation is changing now.

reconstruction of the small Moscow ring

The condition of the Moscow ring until the last reconstruction

In 2012, the ring consisted of tworailways intended for freight traffic. The length of the ring is 178 km. The total number of technical facilities was 110, of which 6 - bridges. There is also one tunnel, 900 meters long (under Gagarin Square). The number of cargo stations is 12. All of them are located on the outside of the ring. Offshoots from the Small Ring served to ensure the flow of goods during the operation of 159 enterprises. By 2013 their number has decreased to 49.

A day along the railway tracks of the Small Ring60-70 freight trains passed. Two thirds of the volume of transportation was the products of the construction complex. Transit freight flows were terminated by the decision of the Russian Railways and transferred to the Big Ring (LMC). Until 2016, of passenger trains, only sightseeing trains in retro style operated on the basis of steam locomotive traction.

Movement on the small ring was temporarily opened, beginning in the autumn of 2010, which was caused by the construction of the overpass. Full-fledged traffic resumed only in February 2013.

Modern reconstruction of the Moscow small ring

The reason for the reconstruction of the Little Moscow Ringeconomic reasons. In conditions of a decrease in cargo traffic, it was less profitable to operate such a cumbersome structure. Therefore, it was decided from 2012 to 2016. to adapt the railways for passenger transportation. More than 210 billion rubles were allocated for these purposes.

construction of a small Moscow ring

Completely to cancel cargo streams notit is assumed. Initially they were planned to be carried out at night, however, later this option was considered ineffective. Therefore, the project was amended, which involves the construction of another (third) railway line, but only on a 37 km long section.

According to the reconstruction project, the CZD will create 31stopping point. According to Mikhail Gromov, General Director of the JSC "MKZhD", all of them will be designed in the original style and will serve as a transport and transfer hub.

In the process of reconstruction works onreplacement of bridges and other technical facilities, railway tracks, power transmission lines were reconstructed. All this led to temporary disruptions in the movement of trains along the ring.

May 3, 2014 stopped the work stations: Lefortovo, Cherkizovo, Likhobory, Presnya, Novoproletarskaya. The rest of the freight transport stations will retain only a partial amount of work.

Thus, the small ring of the Moscow IronThe road is a developing and changing infrastructure that is adapted (albeit slowly) to the needs of the current time. With the gradual electrification of the railways and the replacement of the convoys, the small ring loses its traditional appearance, which it had until recently.
