After that, he became acquainted with the work of Louis Armstrong.

Jazz made a strong impression on Oleg andhis friends-musicians. They began to perform this music at the dance. Oleg Lundstrem, by ear from the records, reproduced the arrangements. As already mentioned above, Oleg Lundstremled the orchestra in 1934. Then it consisted of 9 musicians, counting the leader. A year later, the orchestra won great popularity in Harbin. In 1936 the musicians moved to Shanghai. Here they were a great success. After the war, the musicians became 19 - there was a full big band. Then Oleg Leonidovich decides to try himself as a composer.

The first work he wrote,is called "Interlude". The music of Oleg Lundstrem was based on the intonations of S. Rachmaninov. The next work he wrote was the play "Mirages". Since all the musicians of the orchestra were Soviet people, in 1947 they moved with the families to the USSR. Kazan was chosen because of the presence of the conservatory. The musicians were eager to get an education. They expected their collective to become a state jazz orchestra of the Tatar ASSR. But this did not happen. The Central Committee of the CPSU announced that the Soviet people do not need jazz.

The musicians were assigned to different orchestrascities. Oleg Lundstrem himself became a violinist in the theater of opera and ballet. The artistic director of the Philharmonic organized jazz concerts from time to time. This gave O. Lundstrem's orchestra a chance not to disintegrate. The program of concerts included Soviet and Tatar songs. Oleg Leonidovich made jazz arrangements to them. In 1956 the collective became officially a concert variety orchestra under the direction of O. Lundstrem. Here at different times worked such musicians and vocalists as A. Pugacheva, G. Garanyan, I. Otieva, M. Kristalinskaya, V. Obodzinsky and others.
