May 7 is the day of radio and television. This date was not chosen by chance. It was on May 7, 1895, the famous physicist Alexander Popov demonstrated to members of the physicochemical society the process of wireless recording at a distance of electromagnetic oscillations by the action of a lightning bolt on the simplest receiver he collected. Before the Day of Television and Radio began to celebrate annually, it was first celebrated in 1925 on the territory of the USSR.

Here, the Day of Television and Radio begins with the procession on the night before the seventh of May. This action takes place around the monument of the great Russian physicist Popov located on the territory of the university. On this day, students and teachers begin their greeting with the words: "Popov is risen". In response to this phrase always heard: "Verily Popov." As gifts on this day, it is customary to use radio tubes painted in different colors. The night part of this event was not always approved by the city administration, and since 2012 it has become banned.
Students of Tomsk Radio Institute also annuallycelebrate the Day of Television and Radio. Their tradition is in the annual festive procession through the streets of their native city. In 2001, this event was even given the status of urban. Also students of this institution of higher learning on this day say goodbye to defective equipment. Thanks to this tradition, this event was recorded in the Guinness Book of Records. According to official data, this year the students said goodbye to more than 500 units of faulty equipment.
The place of celebration of this memorable date is not only the former republics of the USSR, but also Bulgaria.
