Hunters caught the horses for sale by the military or for the production of meat - horse meat, from which sausages and bacons were prepared, as well as pet food.

As a result, after fifty years on the American continent, a mustang became a rarity. The horse needed protection, so laws were created to protect these animals. Today they live only in the protected areas of the United States. But the country is still arguing about the status of these animals, because not everyone agrees that they are the historical heritage of America.

Many Americans negatively regard the wildhorses, claiming that they reduce the amount of pet food, even by noticing that wild herds live in arid areas where cows and sheep can not graze because of lack of water. Hard natural selection, which were subjected to wild horses, adapted them to the harshest conditions. In search of food, they take place on a day more than eighty kilometers.

Nowadays, if a wild herd grows very much,then a part of the horses are caught and given to the private household with a surcharge of 125 dollars for each horse taken at the ranch (meaning a mustang).
