How to check the ball bearings on VAZ classic cars
When diagnosing the suspension elements,how to check the ball joint. Ball bearings are installed both on rear-wheel drive vehicles and on front-wheel drive vehicles. Only in the design of the first there are more of them, since a two-lever system is used.

The procedure for performing the diagnostics is as follows:
- Before you check the ball joint, you need to install the car on a level platform and raise the side on which the diagnosis is carried out.
- Beforehand loosen the bolts on the wheel, and after lifting, unscrew them.
- Remove the wheel and place it under the engine.
- Under the lower ball joint, you need to install a wooden beam. Its height should be 19 cm.
- Lower the car onto the bar. The surface on which it is installed must be firm. On the ground do not work.
- Install the bushing of the appliance on the nut of the upper ball attachment, which is closer to the protective cover of the brake disc.
- On the sleeve, put the device on and fix it with a bolt.
- Move the tool to position the lever in an upright position. The lower edge of it must rest against the brake disk casing. Then tighten the bolt.
- The indicator is installed in the base of the base until it stops. The tension should not be more than 2-3 mm.
- Fasten the bracket to the wheel hub using two wheel bolts.
- Install the torque wrench on the hex head.
- Turn the key with a torque of 196 N * m (or 20 kgf / m) to one and two sides.
- Add the readings that will be on the indicator.
The total of the readings should not be more than 0.8 mm. If different from this value, then you need to change the ball joint. Riding a broken one is not only uncomfortable, but also dangerous - at any moment it can pull out a finger from the clip. And if this happens at high speed, a fatal outcome can not be avoided.
The second way to diagnose
But there is not always such an instrument at handto measure backlash. It is much easier to do all the work with the mounting shovel. To do this, you need an assistant, who needs to be seated behind the wheel. The diagnosis is as follows:
- The partner must press the brake pedal to hold the hub. This will eliminate the possibility of the influence of the bearing play during the diagnosis.
- Raise the side of the car on which you want to diagnose.
- Sharply shake the wheel, holding it by the top.
- You can use a mounting shovel, for this you need to install it between the upper arm and the hub. Move the lever up and down, assessing the play between the support ring and the finger.
In the event that you find a play in the upper ball bearing, be sure to replace the element.
Diagnostics of the lower ball
And now how to check the ball joint on the lower lever on the VAZ. To do this, you need to perform several actions:
- If there is dirt on the lower part of the ball joint, it is absolutely necessary to remove it.
- Using the key on the "7" it is necessary to unscrew the plug, which is located on the bottom of the cage.
- It is convenient to carry out diagnostics on the overhead or observation pit. To do this, you need to install the caliper in the hole and measure the distance from the sphere of the ball pin to the lower edge of the body.
- In the event that it is not possible to set the depth gauge of the caliper, you can use a thin wire or even a match. Install it in the hole, after which the ruler measures the distance.
- The maximum distance from the finger should be 11.8 mm. If less, then the ball joint can continue to be used. But if this value is greater, a hinge replacement will be required.
If the diagnosis shows that the replacement of the ballsupport is not required, slam in a little grease. To do this, you can use even a simple syringe, installed in the opening of the bottom of the cage. It is desirable to use grease type "Lithol-24". It can be hammered under anther.
Preparing for replacement
After checking the ball bearings on the VAZ, they revealed their breakdowns, be sure to make a replacement. At the preparation stage you will need to perform the following actions:
- Establish a jack under a repaired party of the car.
- Place wheel chocks under the rear wheels.
- Loosen the bolts on the wheels, then lift the side of the car. Remove the wheel and place it under the engine bottom.

Replacement of upper supports
To remove the top support you will need to perform such manipulations:
- Using the key on "22", it is necessary to unscrew the nut that is located on the hinge pin.
- Then you need to press out the hinge pin, usingSpecial puller, consisting of two levers. One edge rests on the finger of the lower ball, the second - in the upper. Without a puller, you can do this job, but you will have to hit very hard with a hammer. As a result, you can easily break the suspension lever.
- After the ball of the ball comes out of its place, you need to use the keys to "13" to unscrew the nuts with which the clip is attached to the lever.
Replacement of lower supports
After checking the ball 2107 and made surein its failure, it is necessary to unscrew the bolt from the finger. But completely unscrew it will not work, first make a few turns. Further actions:
- Install the puller and remove the ball of the ball bearing and the hub fist. After this you can completely unscrew the nut.
- By means of keys on "13" it is necessary to unscrew three nuts with which the case of a spherical support fastens to the lever of a suspension bracket.
